A mathematical framework for the analysis and design of inter-operator resource sharing mechanisms

Inter-Operator resource sharing, can be used to overcome the challenges posed by the increased number of wireless users, accessing bandwidth demanding applications, over limited network resources. After surveying the different load balancing and resource sharing technologies, this work introduces a mathematical framework that models the sharing of resources and addresses the performance evaluation of such sharing mechanisms. This framework helps overcome the information asymmetry by applying the BCMP theorem from the queuing theory. Moreover using the Chebysheff inequality from the probability theory, this work defines a Grade of Service (GoS) for different classes of traffic, and covers thereby the resource sharing under different types of traffic with different resource demands. A Discrete Event Simulation (DES) model that simulates inter-operator sharing is presented. The simulation results match with the results previewed by the mathematical framework, which verifies its validity. Using this framework, different and heterogeneous wireless operators will be able to design various dynamic resource sharing mechanisms.
