Monitoring patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) typically consists of short observations during in-clinic consultations or paper-based self-reports from patients, both having important limitations due to unreliable input from patients. Wearable sensors and smartphone applications provide the opportunity to monitor symptoms, physical activity and medication use in a more continuous and objective way. This information could be valuable to improve physical therapy care for patients with Parkinson’s disease.

In this respect, Vital@home project aims to provide a remote monitoring system for patients with Parkinson’s disease and physical therapists, focused on physical activity, fall incidents and medication intake. DAI-Labor is the task leader of designing and developing (Android) applications in this remote monitoring system for both patients and professionals to measure relevant PD features in daily life of patients as well as showing the results to the healthcare professionals.
